Wabash Pittsburgh Terminal Railway. . .

One hundred years ago the last major railroad was built into Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The name of this railroad was the Wabash Pittsburgh Terminal Railway and was the brainchild of city native Joseph Ramsey, Jr. who was President of the Wabash Railroad. Financed by millionaire George Jay Gould, this new railroad connected his 15,000 mile railroad empire to the Iron City. Its construction created an epic adventure, set around the 20th Century. The struggle to build the railroad consumed four long years of wrangling, construction delays, labor disputes, accidents and weather related problems. Once built, the line lasted but a few short years before entering receivership, finally passing into the history books in 1916. The story could easily have been a period stage play or dramatic novel. Now, between the covers of this book, Howard V. Worley, Jr. has gathered previously unknown information and, along with rare and century old photographs, technical and financial data, sets down the history of this landmark railroad.

Wabash Pittsburgh Terminal Railway. . .

Is a railroad history filled with fame and fortune, disasters and misfortunes. The men who were involved in the building of this railroad included speculators, tycoons and millionaires, industrialists and entrepeneurs, United States Senators and Congressmen, and even a Vice President of the United States. The setting was the early 20th Century, a tough, "brass knuckle" era, when railroad business was unregulated, wide open, replete with schemes and schemers. Building the Wabash Pittsburgh Terminal Railway required one of the landmark feats of railroad engineering at that time or any time since.
